Pro-Life Arizona Is Energized

Joe Scheidler speaks at the Arizona Pro-Life Conference

Joe Scheidler speaks at the Arizona Pro-Life Conference, Aug. 29

League National Director Joseph Scheidler gave two talks at the 31st annual Arizona Pro-Life Conference, "Building a Legacy of Life: New Frontiers in Life Education," in Scottsdale, AZ August 28 and 29. He also participated in a speakers round table discussion of pro-life issues.

"This conference was one of the most upbeat programs I have ever attended or taken part in," said Scheidler. "Nearly four hundred enthusiastic Arizonans showed up and pledged to change the face of the culture in America"

Held at the Scottsdale Chaparral Suites, the conference featured Janet Folger (now Porter) of Faith2Action, as keynote speaker. Also speaking were Arizona attorney John Jakubczyk and Bishop Thomas Olmsted, who joined with the League last May in voicing opposition to President Barack Obama's reception of an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame and giving the commencement address.

Other guest speakers were Dr. David Prentice of the Family Research Council and Dr. John Mark Reynolds of Biola University. Scheidler was impressed with the optimistic and hopeful attitude of the attendees from all over Arizona and neighboring states. Sunny Turner, who conducts Face the Truth Tours in the Tucson, AZ area, brought several dozen followers to the conference.

Having lost their pro-abortion governor, Janet Napolitano, to Obama's Department of Homeland Security, a number of previously vetoed pro-life bills were signed by new Governor Jan Brewer and have become law. This victory added to the celebratory mood of the conference.

Jakubczyk expressed his belief that Arizona is fast becoming the hub of a new and reenergized pro-life movement.

Joe Scheidler spent a lively Independence Day eve in the very heart of the birthplace of "The Star Spangled Banner," Baltimore, Maryland. The occasion was the annual convention of the Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport Marriott Hotel. Scheidler participated at the invitation of Margie Hermano, coordinator of the Chicago area Couples for Christ.

Scheidler arrived as David Bereit of 40 Days for Life, was addressing the conference. Following David's talk, Scheidler attended Mass celebrated by Justin Cardinal Rigali of Philadelphia. The Cardinal gave a powerful talk on the intrinsic worth of every human being, and how each person must decide what he will do to counter the violent attacks against our most basic human values. "The time," said Cardinal Rigali, "has arrived for each of us to take a determined stand."

Couples for Christ, Defending Life

On the Fourth of July, Scheidler was honored to deliver a keynote speech dealing with the spiritual dimensions of the pro-life battle. This special pro-life summit had been called in an attempt to find a strategic plan for Christians to sustain opposition to abortion and to build a platform to defend life and renew family values.

Other speakers included Fank Padilla, founder of Couples for Christ, Christa Lopiccolo, Adolfo Paglinawan and Rick McKinney.

Scheidler headed back to Chicago in time to join his family in their annual Independence Day celebration with fireworks in Glenview, Illinois.

The Pro-Life Action League has made headlines on a variety of pro-life issues in recent months, across a broad spectrum of media. The League garnered outstanding local coverage of Face the Truth Tours, including WTVO Channel 17 TV in Rockford, Illinois on August 12.

The League's battle with the City of Chicago over the new Bubble Zone there was heavily covered by Chicago TV, radio and print news media, and by national pro-life media outlets as well. League Executive Director Eric Scheidler was quoted extensively in newspaper, radio and TV news reports of the controverial abortion "opening day" in Naples, Florida.

League spokesmen were also interviewed on the continuing legal battle in Illinois over parental notification and the fight to keep abortion funding out of the health care overhaul. The League's Corrina Gura and Matt Yonke were profiled in a RedEye newspaper cover story appearing December 23 on young pro-life activists.
